What To Make Of This?
Came across this ad on Godspy.com and I have to say, I can't decide exactly what to make of this: The Bad Catholic's Guide To Good Living. From the site: "In 1950 Pope Pius XII announced the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven—some seven years before Stalin’s Sputnik program put a Soviet into space. Do you think this was an accident? Oh, you are SO naïve…."
According to the Editorial Reviews on Amazon, the book is, "A zany but ultimately reverent look at the saints, doctrines, customs and folklore of the Catholic Church, with recipes for food and fun from all over the world, and crackpot, delightful party ideas. Written by a Catholic journalist and a four-star chef, it’s an entertaining guide and guerilla catechism, wrapped up in one hilarious package."
Testimonial quotes include the publisher of Godspy.com and, interestingly for Food Network fan like me, Mario Batali.
What do you think ... order a copy or ... ummm ... wait for the movie?

This looks strange. Just by looking at the cover i don't know if it's making fun of things Catholic or not. If the content is true to tradition and doctrine and is able to share it in a fun and light way, then I'm OK with it...
Christmas vacation reading?
Dear Hector,
As the author, I would like to assure that the book is orthodox and respectful of the cores beliefs and practices of the Church. But it does have fun with some of the more eccentric saints' lives and zany worldwide customs of Catholics. Check it out in a bookstore and see for yourself!
Thanks John! Then it goes in my Christmas wish list...
All right ... I'm going to have to give it a shot...
My wife picked up a copy, and what John says is true--it is respectful of the Church, and it's also frequently laugh-out-loud funny. My wife and I are still chuckling over the Confession Party (a way to encourage your Catholic friends to go to confession) as well as some of the suggested menus for various feast days. Rabbit fricasee for Easter? Why not?
Beyond respectful to the church - how true is this book to the Gospels (or does it make light of the doctrine of Christ)?
Having not read it - I ask to get an opinion from you have read or from John as the author
Thanks
When Catholics become wary of laughing -- especially at themselves -- then the siege mentality has gone too far. Come out of the ghetto, throw open the windows to the modern world, loosen up and by all means read this hilarious book. Claim your identity as a "bad catholic," because there ain't any other kind, and that alone should tell you how faithful this book is to the Gospel. This book is about grace!
